Advice: DIY Weddings with Unique Themes

Need some advice or inspiration for your wedding? Here's a round up of some unique DIY wedding themes and ideas for you to consider as you are deciding what kind of wedding you want. Please enjoy and let us know if any of the tips below are helpful!

If your wedding day is the day you have been waiting for all of your life, why would you want your special day to be like everyone else's? Why spend a fortune on expensive wedding planners when you can do it yourself? Every wedding needs a theme, but many of them have been done to death, so if you want your wedding to be unique, ditch the overdone fairy tale and casual beach concepts and choose a unique design. Here's a few unconventional ideas to invigorate a traditional wedding, and a few tips on how to reflect your own personality and style on your big day without breaking the bank.

Country Chic

Incorporate your favorite aspects of the country. What are the subtle nuances that appeal to you? The key to a unique country wedding is in the details.

Offer an open-barn bar. Select barware suitable for a rural afternoon. Serve up blueberry vodka lemonade in mason jars to add a touch of country charm. This do-it-yourself hack can save you time and money as the jars are less expensive than stemware and less likely to break (depending, of course, on how rowdy your barn guests are).

Walk down the aisle to your favorite country song. "Forever and Ever, Amen" by Randy Travis or "It's Your Love" by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill would be appropriate choices. Go with a song that feels right.

After the ceremony, host a celebration with a hay ride for your guests, a bonfire for ambiance and a barbecue for some good eats. End your reception with a good, old-fashioned barn dance.

Naturally, planning a barn or outdoor wedding, you'll have to think of a few logistics beforehand, like well-tempered horses for drawing the wagons and generators for power, but with a little forethought, you'll be well prepared.

Travel Trend

If you and your betrothed are the adventurous type, a travel-themed wedding is the concept for you. For a touch of romantic aesthetic, display your's and your fiance's families' heritage geographically. Decorate your wedding hall with affordable prints of world maps that pinpoint where each of your families came from. This simple, easy and visually impressive decor will show how far the two of you have come — through generations — to be together.

Other decorative accents to include: luggage tags to hold place cards and paper rose centerpieces crafted from copies of antique atlases.

For added flare and guest amusement, set up backdrops of scenic, foreign locales and allow guests photo opportunities in front of their favorite landmarks, cityscapes and destinations.

Carnival-Centric

For a slightly strange but charmingly vintage wedding, a carnival-centric theme can create an unforgettable experience for you and your guests. An outdoor county fair or swap meet location is the perfect blank canvas on which to paint your carnival concept.

Possibly the best aspect of a carnival wedding is that you can hire food trucks to simplify catering and they'll blend seamlessly into your theme. Add a cotton candy stand and ice cream truck or make a giant banana split for dessert.

After the ceremony, your guests can wander through the attractions of your wedding carnival. Individual booths can be constructed and painted inexpensively. These can feature such carny staples as a fortune teller, a kissing booth and a caricaturist. Add an adult-sized bouncy house for good measure and you'll have yourself an affair to remember.

Your wedding day should be as unique and memorable as you are. Go against the wedding-theme grain. With a few tips and your personal touch, you and your love can take the first step of your journey together in style.

Do any of these themes strike a note for you? If I was to do my wedding again, I'd do a travel theme, though the carnival theme is fun! The images here are from real weddings we've featured with the themes mentioned here. Click each image to see the full scale wedding and details.
